Awadeshalo Project

Awadeshalo Project is an up and coming organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of Ethiopian street children through love, compassion and education. The project’s founder, Jenny Gerfen, spent six months in Ethiopia in 2007 and realized that more needed to be done for the estimated 600,000 children living on the streets (approximately the population of 8 Bellingham’s).

Awadeshalo Project believes that anybody can and should make a difference in the lives of the world’s children. Globalization has made people closer as numbers and buyers in a system, and now we need to make the effort to become closer as humans, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, friends. What happens to one happens to all. While collaborating to bring community together in Bellingham, we can change lives half way around the world in Ethiopia.

So, in this spirit Awadeshalo Project and INNATE have hand crafted this night of pub crawling and Sweet Beats musical magic to raise awareness for a heartbreaking issue while manifesting your boundless power of love in the face of injustice.

Land your Pub Crawling at INNATE for bucket loads of delectable grooves from Bellingham's own Sweet Beats in the spirit of togetherness and compassion.

INNATE on ESPN

Welcome To the Party, Pals

Batten it down Bellingham, Innate Snow & Skate, Washington's newest core store, is doing their grand opening blast off this coming Friday, November 21 and all are totally welcome. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. the day-to-night event will feature live screen printing, a first look at the new winter gear they're stocking, and music of the crunk, punk, funk kind from area artist Vaugn Krestoe.
within four walls. Innate provides the tools for you to pursue your outdoor passions, from skis, snowboards, and bombproof outerwear to local music, artwork and screen printed apparel, we push good vibrations by the bucket load (And they're promising this to be just the first of many planned brouhahas.)

Whether this suffering economy can support another specialty retailer in small town America, we'll definitely find out ... Better them get established and succeed than another big chain location like Dick's, Sport Chalet / Mart, and the like. Just my two cents spent to benefit the true patrons of snowboarding's growth, the little guys. Once a shop rat, always a shop rat.

New business attempts to capture essence of Whatcom County

- THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

Warren said they originally wanted to start a community cooperative for musicians and artists, but the plan evolved after the outdoor equipment retail store The Edge went out of business earlier this year in that same spot.

"We decided to embrace the idea of retail and integrate it with our artist plans," said Warren, adding that he and Warnberg were originally drawn to the area because of the skiing and snowboarding at the Mt. Baker Ski Area. "We wanted all the ingredients in this business that reflects what makes this area great."

Walking into the store, what will probably catch the attention of new customers is the huge mural on the west wall. The mural is of downtown Bellingham. On top of the Herald Building in the mural is a neon "Heaven" sign, replacing the "Herald" sign in the skyline.

"We wanted to use a Bellingham icon, and the 'Herald' sign is something you can see everywhere," Warren said. "We replaced it with 'Heaven' because that's the one word that explains how we feel about this area."

Once they're ready to go, they plan to have the store open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. They also plan to have the Web site www.IN8Northwest.com up and running soon with information on upcoming events. For more information about the business, call (360) 392-8675.

OTHER TIDBITS

Last week Ralf's Pretzel Bakery opened at the Depot Market Square, giving Ralf and Kacy Sigl a chance to offer their German-style bread and pretzels regularly seen at the Bellingham Farmers Market. It's open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, as well as participating in the farmers market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Along with the pretzels and bread, the business offers sandwiches and Onyx coffee. This week the bakery plans to start its bicycle delivery service throughout Bellingham. For details, call 733-3066 or visit www.ralfsbakery.com. ... A tenant improvement permit has been issued by the city of Bellingham to convert a former deli shop into a restaurant called Sehome Diner.

Retail Tip Sheet runs each Monday. Reach Dave Gallagher at 715-2269 or dave.gallagher@bellinghamherald.com. Visit his business blog online at TheBellinghamHerald.com/blogs.

ON THE FLY by Derek Yost

On November 7th IN8 Snow and Skate will host an evening of art, music, and Pacific Northwest culture. Derek Yost is a Portland artist that you may or may not be familiar with, but his methods and art will feel familiar to many. He is an artist based in reality and spirituality, He is an artist that is in a constant state of creative motion, He is an artist that is definitely worth checking out. The 7th will also have Seattle’s own Tulsi. Tulsi is a an artist that has been making music for many years, his style reflects his surroundings. Living in The Northwest has a certain way of effecting moods, and when you are making music that mood has a large impact on your overall sound. I would describe Tulsi’s music as Soulful yet somber, fun yet serious, and easy listening yet deep. So come out, check out Derek, check out Tulsi, and come support one of the only all ages, live music venues in town IN8 Snow and Skate.
